A discolored or otherwise unappealing tooth in your smile can have a significant impact on your self-esteem. If you have several teeth with cosmetic imperfections, Dr. Alberto A. Herrero might recommend dental veneers. For a single tooth in need of restoration, he might recommend a porcelain dental crown.

This will replicate the tooth enamel layer with a special dental porcelain material. The crown itself is hollow to allow it to be anchored on a post-like abutment formed from the core structures of the tooth.

Dr. Alberto A. Herrero will first need to remove the entire tooth enamel layer with a drill. Then he will make an impression of the abutment and any corresponding teeth in your bite pattern.

The impression will be sent to a dental lab where the porcelain crown will be custom made. A hard, plastic cap, known as a temporary crown, will be cemented over the abutment to protect it.

You will need to return to Alberto A. Herrero, DDS for a follow-up appointment when your porcelain crown is ready. The temporary crown will be removed and the new crown will be cemented directly onto the abutment.
