The American Dental Association advocates a daily oral hygiene regimen that includes brushing your teeth twice each day and flossing each evening. This will remove food particles and bacterial plaque before they have a chance to harden into tartar, encourage gum disease, or foster tooth decay. While your techniques are certainly important, using only high-quality oral hygiene products is also critical for maintaining a healthy mouth.

Some products have only cosmetic value, yet this can be clouded by marketing messages that make exorbitant claims. To help consumers identify the best products for their families, the ADA instituted their Seal of Acceptance program. Since its inception in 1931, it has become the industry standard for identifying a high-quality oral hygiene product.

If a manufacturer wants to earn the Seal of Acceptance they will need to submit it to the ADA’s laboratories. The active ingredients will then be tested and researched for safety and effective use in an oral hygiene regimen.

If a product meets the rigorous guidelines, it will earn the right to print the Seal of Acceptance on the label. This means you should feel confident in its ability to help maintain the good oral health of you and your family.

To further help consumers with their research, the ADA also provides an index of all oral hygiene products that have earned the seal on their website.
